One of the top golfers in the state of Iowa the past four years, Brooke Newell expects to redshirt as a freshman at Nebraska. An outstanding multi-sport athlete at Atlantic High School in Iowa, was the 2016 Iowa Class 3A Co-Golfer of the Year and was a three-time top-three individual finisher at the state championships. She also helped Atlantic to back-to-back Class 3A state team titles as a junior and senior.
Newell plans to focus athletically on golf for the first time this season and hone her skills to be ready to help the Huskers as a redshirt freshman in 2018-19.
"Brooke has decided to redshirt," Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. "She comes to Nebraska as a multi-sport athlete, so this will be her first opportunity to focus on golf. The redshirt season will be a big benefit as she learns a few things about how to play the game at this level. I love her athletic ability and her learning mindset."
Newell powered Atlantic High School to back-to-back Iowa Class 3A state championships as a junior in 2016 and a senior in 2017. Individually, Newell was the Class 3A Co-Golfer of the Year in 2016 after finishing as the state runner-up. She added another individual state runner-up finish as a senior. She added a third-place individual finish as a sophomore in 2015, and was a member of Atlantic's Class 3A state championship team as a freshman in 2014.
A three-sport athlete, Newell was a three-time Hawkeye Ten Conference champion. As a junior in 2016, she won the league title after shooting a 69 at Fox Run Golf Course in Council Bluffs.
The three-time first-team all-state golfer was also a member of the Class 3A All-Tournament team the past three seasons, Newell was a second-team all-state selection as a freshman in 2014. She is also a four-time first-team all-district and first-team All-Hawkeye Ten Conference choice for Coach Kathy Hobson at Atlantic.
As a softball player, Newell captured All-Western Iowa and All-Hawkeye Ten Conference honors as a catcher/utility player in both 2015 and 2016 for the Trojans. In 2016, she helped the Atlantic softball team to its first state tournament appearance in the 42-year history of the program. She led Atlantic in hits and RBIs in 2016, after hitting .379 with 17 doubles and 41 RBIs in the summer of 2015. She hit .400 with 13 doubles and 32 RBIs when she also stole 10 bases in 2014.
Newell also competed for Atlantic’s basketball team.
Brooke is the daughter of Danny and Tori Newell. She has two brothers and a sister. Brooke plans to major in animal science. She was a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2018, and she earned a spot on the 2018 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
Newell, who also considered Missouri State and Southern Illinois, said she chose Nebraska because felt at home on campus. “I really like the coaches, the athletic facilities and the tradition,” Newell said. “I fell in love with the campus when I went to visit. It felt like home.”
