Game Notes

Nebraska won two games in one day for the first time in four tries this season...NU tied its season high with 13 hits, after setting that season high in game one Saturday...Gina Metzler led off the game with a single to increase her career-long hitting streak to eight games...after having a career-high three hits in the first game Saturday, Metzler had a career-high four hits vs. Lamar, her fourth multi-hit game this year...it marked the first four-hit game for a Husker since Kiki Stokes against Wisconsin on May 7, 2016...Metzler went 7-for-8 in Saturday's two games...Cassie McClure struck out in the first inning, snapping her streak of reaching base safely in seven consecutive plate appearances...in the circle, McClure earned both wins Saturday.

Fayetteville, Ark. - A four-run sixth inning powered the Huskers to an 8-6 victory over Lamar, capping an undefeated Saturday for the Nebraska softball team at the Wooo Pig Classic.

Nebraska (4-12) led for most of the game until Lamar (6-12) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. The Huskers responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, then survived a two-run home run from Lamar in the top of the seventh to win its second game of the day.

Senior right-hander Cassie McClure earned the victory in both games. McClure (3-4) threw only 1.1 innings against Lamar, allowing two runs on one hit. Junior right-hander Kaylan Jablonski threw 5.2 innings against the Cardinals, but did not factor into the decision after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits.

Offensively, junior Gina Metzler capped a near-perfect day by going 4-for-4 against Lamar with two runs scored and two RBIs. Metzler set a career high in hits for the second straight game, after going 3-for-4 against IUPUI in Saturday's first game. Metzler's two RBIs were also a career high. Junior Austen Urness also produced a pair of RBIs, while Jablonski and senior MJ Knighten each had two hits.

Nebraska used clutch hitting to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Metzler began the frame with a single and sophomore Alyvia Simmons followed with another single. With one out, Metzler and Simmons executed a double steal and both players scored on a two-out RBI double from Urness.

Lamar got on the board in the top of the third thanks to a Husker error. A throwing error following a bunt put a Cardinal on third base with one out before a sacrifice fly trimmed the lead to 3-1.

Nebraska answered with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. The first two Huskers were quickly retired before junior Laura Barrow singled with one out. Jablonski followed with a double to left field and Barrow scored on the play after a Lamar throwing error. Freshman Lexey Kneib made it 4-1 with an RBI single up the middle. The Huskers had a chance for more after back-to-back singles loaded the bases, but the Big Red missed a chance to blow the game open as a ground out ended the threat.

Lamar got one run back in the top of the fifth but the Cardinals also missed a chance to tack on more runs. The first two batters were retired before back-to-back singles marked the end of the inning for Jablonski. McClure came on in relief and inherited a 2-0 count and issued a walk after being called for a 10-second violation, which resulted in ball four to load the bases. McClure's next pitch barely clipped Brynn Baca to force in a run and cut the lead to 4-2, but McClure then escaped a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.

The Cardinals then tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The first two hitters reached on singles and Lamar picked up its first run on an RBI ground out. Then with two outs, the Cardinals tied the game on an RBI single from Corina Thornton.

The Huskers stormed back in the bottom of the frame. Jablonski led off with a single before an error put Huskers on first and second with one out. Freshman Alexis Perry advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Metzler lined the first pitch she saw into right center for a two-run double that allowed the Huskers to regain the lead at 6-4. Another error allowed Metzler to score and NU loaded the bases before capping the inning when Barrow drew a bases-loaded walk to score Simmons and push the lead to 8-4.

Jablonski re-entered the game to pitch the seventh inning and allowed a two-run homer before preserving the 8-6 win.

Nebraska wraps up its stay at the Woo Pig Classic on Sunday morning with a rematch against Lamar at 10 a.m.
