2019 (Sophomore)
Curtis built upon the foundation she laid in her freshman season, competing in ten events this season primarily on vault and beam. She set her career high on balance beam with a score of 9.825 twice this season with the last time coming against Ohio State on Feb. 16. She was also named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2019.

2018 (Freshman)
Curtis saw action in four meets during her freshman campaign while adding depth on the vault. In her first career appearance on the vault, she posted a season-high 9.775 vs. Michigan. She also scored 9.750 on the vault in her last appearance of the season at Oklahoma. She also joined the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2018.

Before Nebraska
Curtis trained at Summit Gymnastics in Savannah, Ga, under Shelley Davis and Dave Anderson. A two-time J.O. National Championships qualifier, Curtis finished tied for 12th on floor at the 2016 national meet. A talented vaulter, Curtis finished second on the event at the 2017 Georgia State Championships and third at the 2017 Region 8 Championships. At the 2016 Region 8 Championships, she also notched a second-place finish on vault, a fifth-place finish on floor and a sixth-place finish in the all-around. She finished tied for third on both vault and beam at the 2016 Georgia State Championships. Curtis also posted strong scores competing for Excalibur Gymnastics in 2015, including a fourth-place finish on vault at the 2015 J.O. National Championships. Curtis finished second on beam, fifth on floor and tied for fourth in the all-around at the 2015 Virginia State Championships. She chose Nebraska over Florida and Georgia.

Personal
The daughter of Melissa Curtis and Shane Gilmore, Makayla was born on January 29, 1999. Makayla has an older brother, Hunter, and a younger brother, Christian. A 2017 graduate of Islands High School, Curtis has not declared a major at Nebraska. She earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2018 and 2019.
