Thiele Captures Nebraska Stroke Play Title
Nebraska sophomore Haley Thiele fired a final-round five-under-par 66 to claim the Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association Stroke Play Tournament title on Tuesday at the Ashland Golf Club.
Thiele, who redshirted during her second season at Nebraska in 2016-17 while recovering from a wrist injury, was par or better on all 18 holes at Ashland, including birdies on No. 1, No. 5 and No. 16 and an eagle on the par-5, 403-yard 12th hole.
Thiele opened the tournament with an even-par 71 on Monday to finish with a five-under-par 137 through 36 holes in the 47-player field to win the tournament title by five strokes. She was the only golfer to shoot par or better on Tuesday.
It was the first women's amateur title of Thiele's career. She was the Nebraska Girls Stroke Play champion in 2013 and the girls runner-up in 2014 and 2015, trailing only her younger sister, Hannah, for those two titles. Hannah Thiele will join Haley on the Husker roster as a freshman in 2017-18. Haley Thiele was also a two-time Nebraska Girls Match Play champion in 2013 and 2014, while adding a runner-up finish in 2015.
As a true freshman at Nebraska in 2015-16, Haley Thiele produced a then-Husker freshman record 75.63 stroke average while tying the Nebraska 54-hole record with her 209 at the UNLV Collegiate Showdown. Her performance at UNLV included a Nebraska freshman-record 67 in the opening round.
