Huskers Take Third at Augustana Twilight
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Nebraska cross country team began its 2017 season with a solid start at the Augustana Twilight on Friday at Yankton Trails.
Both the Husker men and women placed third. The men’s team scored 84 points in a four-mile run, while the women’s team scored 92 points in a 5K.
Redshirt freshman Mark Freyhof led the men’s squad and finished in the top-10 at the Augustana Twilight for the second-consecutive year, placing sixth with a time of 19:47.00 after finishing ninth last season. Senior Austin Post claimed 14th with a time of 20:00.61, and freshman Bailey Timmons posted a time of 20:03.71 and placed 16th. Eric Karl II finished 27th in 20:12.18, and Alex Tollinger finished in the Huskers' top five with a 42nd-place finish in a time of 20:31.59.
Senior Bonnie Smith led the women’s team with a time of 18:15.35, finishing 13th. Sophomore Rachel Brush finished with a time of 18:20.74, placing 17th with senior Katrina Santiago following right behind in 18th with a time of 18:20.86. Freshman Erika Freyhof opened her collegiate career finishing 21st with a time of 18:26.67. Judi Jones (18:32.61) and Lillian Markusch (18:36.31) were just behind in 23rd and 24th, respectively.
Sioux Falls won the men’s race with a score of 55, while South Dakota took first on the women’s side with 24 points.
The Cornhuskers look to continue to build their momentum going into the 28th annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.
