Huskers Complete Season at NCAA Midwest Regional
The Nebraska cross country team completed the 2017 season on Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional at the ISU Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa. The Husker men placed eighth in the 10K race with 262 points, and the women placed 21st in the 6K race with 507 points.
Junior Wyatt McGuire was the top NU finisher, placing 14th overall with a time of 29:29.98, a personal best as a Husker at the NCAA Midwest Regional. McGuire is the first runner to be named All-Region since David Adams in 2010.
“Wyatt McGuire led our team again,” said Nebraska Head Coach David Harris. “He was 14th overall in the region, the highest place we’ve ever had in the region. He was All-Region, the top 25 finishers receive that recognition. He’ll be back next year and I have no doubt that he can go after a top-5, maybe even the championship in this region.”
Senior Austin Post placed 34th with a time of 29:53.99 and senior Peter Spinks finished 69th with a time of 30:26.45. Both posted their best times as a Husker in regional competition on Friday.
“Austin was out there pushing the pace at the front of the race in the beginning,” said Harris. “He can do that occasionally, drifted back a little bit. All and all by going after like that, he finished very high. Higher than he would have if he worked his way through the field. Pete did a very good job with the seniors.”
Sophomore Karson LeComte finished 70th at 30:26.90 and redshirt freshman Mark Freyhof finished 75th with a time of 30:29.96. Freshman Bailey Timmons finished 78th with a time of 30:31.37 and junior Eric Karl II finished 114th at 31:03.53.
“I am very pleased with the men’s finish,” said Harris. “To get eighth is our highest finish ever in this region. I give credit to how hard the men worked this year. We had some excellent training and to move up to the top-eight with the group that we have is outstanding this year. Overall we saw the men move up in the Big Ten and Regional. I want to see us continue to do that.”
Senior Bonnie Smith was the top NU finisher for the women’s team, finishing 75th with a time of 21:29.13, her best mark at the NCAA Midwest Regional as a Husker.
“Bonnie led us again,” said Harris. “We had a very good front three and as a team we need to be up higher. All and all it was a good effort.”
Sophomore Rachel Brush finished 79th with a time of 21:32.21 and freshman Erika Freyhof finished 81st at 21:33.29.
“Erika Freyhof had a very good race,” said Harris. “She led for us much of the race. Rachel Brush did very well. Bonnie is a senior of course so we are going to miss her.”
Sophomore Elsa Forsberg finished 129th with a time of 22:00.16 and senior Anna Peer finished 143rd at 22:12.56. Senior Katrina Santiago finished 152nd with a time of 22:16.61 and senior Kendall Cast finished 208th at 23:26.27.
