Haraden Opens Spring with Career Best

By NU Athletic Communications

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico - Jessica Haraden matched her collegiate career best with a two-over-par 73 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team in the opening round at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on the Rio Mar Country Club River Course on Sunday morning.

Haraden, a sophomore from Thousand Oaks, Calif., closed Nebraska's opening round of the spring season in a tie for ninth place individually while playing out of the No. 5 position in the Husker lineup.

Fellow sophomore Kate Smith added a three-over-par 74 to sit in a tie for 14th place after the first 18 holes on the par-71, 5,981-yard layout of the River Course at Rio Mar.

While the Huskers got solid opening rounds from Haraden and Smith, the rest of the young Huskers struggled in their first rounds of the spring. Sophomore Annie Sritragul and freshman Noor Ahmed each settled for rounds of 81 to complete the Husker team scoring in the six-count-four format. As a team, Nebraska closed the day at 309 in ninth place ahead of No. 19 Colorado (310) and the hosts from No. 17 Purdue (312).

Arkansas, ranked No. 4 in the nation in the GolfStat rankings, played the best golf of the day with an even-par 284. Razorback Maria Fassi carded the day's best round with a three-under-par 68, while teammate Dylan Kim added an even-par 71 to sit in a four-way tie for second.

No. 22 Kent State sits eight shots back of Arkansas at 292, while No. 26 Iowa State is 12 strokes off the lead at 296.

The Huskers continue the three-day Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Monday with a 6 a.m. (CT) shotgun start for the second round.
