Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 42 Nebraska women’s tennis team brought tenacity and force to Manhattan, Kan., this morning as it upset the No. 35 Kansas State Wildcats, 4-2.

Doubles competition set the stage for the Huskers’ fight today, as the Big Red came back from a sudden 6-2 loss on court 1 with dominating wins on courts 2 and 3, capturing the doubles point for Nebraska.

Sophomore pair Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad netted Nebraska’s first doubles victory, as the two took down Cats Maria Linares and Ines Mesquita in a decisive 6-2 triumph.

Junior Vasanti Shinde and senior Katerina Matysova built off the sophomores’ energy, digging deep to pull off a 6-4 defeat of KSU’s Anna Turco and Rosanna Maffei, 6-4.

Singles play kicked off next in the four-hour-long match, as the first matches began to play out on all three courts of the Body First Indoor Tennis Center.

After the Huskers fell in the first two matches on courts 1 and 3, senior Brianna Lashway set up the Big Red’s comeback with her defeat of rival Linares from the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4.

In the latter three matches, Reifeis swiftly collected another point for Nebraska from the No. 4 spot with her overpowering 6-1, 6-2 win over Wildcat Carolina Costamagna.

Close matches played out on courts 5 and 6 as the Huskers fought for one more win to secure their Friday morning victory.

In a tight neck-and-neck battle from the No. 5 spot, Matysova ended up being Nebraska’s final champion of the night. The senior captain came from behind to win both sets of her singles match, defeating Mesquita 6-4, 7-5 and closing the triumphant match for the Huskers.

Nebraska will be back at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday morning as the team builds off today’s win in its 11 a.m. match against the Iowa State Cyclones.
