Huskers Can't Top Terrapins, 4-2

By NU Athletic Communications

College Park, Md. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team was unable to follow up on the momentum of Friday’s win at Rutgers, falling to the Maryland Terrapins, 4-2, on Sunday. The Huskers are now 15-6 on the season and 4-4 in the Big Ten.

Early morning action at the Junior Tennis Champions Center kicked off with tough doubles competition.

Pulling ahead early and first to claim a win on the morning, Katerina Matysova and Vasanti Shinde pulled in a victory at the No. 3 position. The duo halted their Maryland opponents, Saya Usui and Kate Yemelyanenka, with a strong 6-2 final mark.

With a win for the Terrapins on court 2, Paula Del Cueto Castillo and Brianna Lashway were up to clinch the doubles team point for the Big Red at No. 1 doubles. The top-flight pair pushed the match, but suffered a close loss to Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton, 7-5.

Moving on to Big Ten Conference singles competition, the Huskers looked to switch up the pace with just four wins needed to take home the dual for the day.

Settling in to top-tennis action, Del Cueto Castillo rocketed to her first victory of the morning. The junior pulled in a smooth 6-2, 6-2 victory over Arnelle Sullivan at No. 4 singles to tie up the dual for Nebraska.

The only Husker to claim two wins, Shinde followed suit picking up the Big Red’s final win against the Terrapins. The junior showed polished skill, defeating Maryland’s Stretton 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles position. Nebraska advanced to lead the match 2-1.

Though Husker singles competitors fell on courts 1, 2 and 6 to their opponents, clinching the 4-2 win for Maryland, Matysova was primed to take the win over Yemelyanenka on court 5. The senior owned a 6-4, 6-5 score when the match was called.

Nebraska women's tennis returns home to finish out their 2018 regular season with a match against the Iowa Hawkeyes scheduled for Saturday, April 14, at noon. Fans can stay up to date with the Huskers by visiting Huskers.com or by following the team on Twitter, at @HuskersWTennis.
