Dobbs New Director of N Club

By Brian Rosenthal

A former Nebraska baseball player who has spent the past 10 years in development and fundraising is expanding his role with the Nebraska Athletics Department.

Nebraska Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced Thursday that he is appointing Mike Dobbs as Executive Director of the N Club, the official alumni group for Nebraska letterwinners in all sports.

Dobbs, Senior Development Officer, will officially become the N Club’s new director on Saturday, the day after the group’s annual golf tournament.

Mike Dobbs has been a key part of our development and fundraising team, and is great at building and improving relationships,” Moos said. “He is a natural choice to head up our N-Club, not only because of his skill set and personality, but also as a former Cornhusker letterwinner himself. Mike will do a great job in this new role, while also continuing to be a resource to our donors as a member of our Development staff.”

Dobbs, who grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, moved to Lincoln at age 16 and attended Lincoln East High School, where he participated in basketball, baseball and golf and became a member of the school’s athletic hall of fame. He earned a scholarship to Nebraska in baseball and lettered with the Huskers from 1983-86.

“It’s an honor that Bill Moos has confidence in me to lead the N Club,” Dobbs said. “Being a former letter winner, I just feel like I know the feelings of the student athletes. I know the pride that the ‘N’ means to all of us when we played. Now that I’m in the athletic department, I still have that same pride toward the letter ‘N.’ Everything we do is for Nebraska and the student athlete.”

Dobbs joined Nebraska Athletics after working in sales with Crouch Recreation, led by Nebraska football letterwinner and Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch. Before his work there, Dobbs spent 11 years as a coach and teacher at Lincoln Southeast High School, where helped coach Alex Gordon, the current Kansas City Royals outfielder who became a member of the N Club while starring in baseball at Nebraska.

Mike Dobbs is a good friend of mine and has done amazing things for the university,” Gordon said. “His work ethic and commitment is a perfect fit to lead the N Club.”

The N Club’s mission is to provide opportunities for letterwinning alumni from all sports for connection, engagement and involvement through events, special reunions and regular communication while supporting the athletic, academic and career success of current student-athletes. As an integral part of the Nebraska Athletics family, the N Club works to uphold and enhance the great traditions of Nebraska.

The N Club has previously been under the umbrella of the Life Skills department, led by Keith Zimmer and Ashley Stone.

“Keith and Ashley and their team have done a great job,” Dobbs said. “They have a great blueprint. It’s already kind of on auto-pilot. I’d like to consider changing a few events, maybe add a larger event during the year. I’d like to see some big events.”

Dobbs will continue with all of the N Club’s current events, including the ceremony of letterwinner jackets in the spring and fall, the weekend of champions reunions and the letterwinner Tunnel Walk for one home football game each season.

Dobbs said he’s looking to add bigger events and wants to connect with more letterwinners in central Nebraska.

With more than 6,000 letterwinners worldwide, Dobbs will open the umbrella of fundraising with the N Club while continuing his fundraising role with the athletic department. He said he’ll split his duties equally between current donor relations and N Club relations.

Membership to the N Club is free for those who have met required letterwinner criteria.
