Huskers Announce Ambitious 2018-19 Schedule
LINCOLN, Neb. - The schedule for the 2018-2019 Nebraska men's golf season has been released by head coach Mark Hankins. The Huskers will enter their first year under new leadership with a number of new events on the schedule, a few return trips to familiar tournaments and a brand new home invitational that Nebraska will be hosting for the first time since 2005. Coach Hankins believes that this season is set up for the Huskers to gain needed experience against elite teams across the country in order to compete with the nation's best programs.
"We have developed a highly ranked schedule which creates opportunities against a mix of top ranked teams from around the entire country," Hankins said. "A strong schedule allows our players the opportunity to compete for higher national rankings both as a team and as individuals."
When asked about his outlook and goals for the program, Coach Hankins made it clear that he intends for the Huskers to be properly prepared and compete at the highest level each and every week. After forming this year's schedule, he sees it as one piece of the process when building a nationally competitive golf team at the Division I level.
"Our goal each year is to compete in the NCAA Championships by being ranked high enough to be selected to NCAA Regional play," Hankins said. "The strong competition will also help to prepare our players for the Big Ten Championships where we will need to feel comfortable in competing with our conference peers in order to maximize our opportunity to finish high in the standings."
NU will be hosting the inaugural Husker Invitational in the spring, which will be the first men’s event hosted in Lincoln since the 2005 Fairway Club Invitational. Nebraska will also be hosting the Big Red Alumni Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. as well as the Challenge at The Farms in San Diego, Calif. Coach Hankins expanded on some of the details for the Husker Invitational to be held on April 13.
"The Huskers will return home to host an invitational in the Lincoln area involving up to six teams this inaugural year," Hankins said. "It is a great opportunity to have home course advantage early in the spring golf season in Nebraska and to showcase our Husker men’s golf team in front of our home crowd."
Start times for the events will be announced in the weeks leading up to each tournament.
