Huskers Announce 2018-19 Schedule

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. - The schedule for the 2018-2019 Nebraska women’s tennis season has been released by head coach Scott Jacobson, who will be entering his 28th year as the head coach this fall. The Huskers kick off their 2018-19 slate with three fall tournaments, including trips to Midland, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota for weekend duals before heading to Iowa City, Iowa in mid-October for the ITA Central Regionals. The spring season begins January 19 with a nonconference dual against Air Force and conference play starts up on March 16 on the road at Michigan.

"This is the strongest non-conference schedule we had in six years," Jacobson said. "We have an experienced group and this schedule is set up to challenge them as we look to build off the success we had last season."

Under Jacobson’s leadership, the Huskers had their best season since 2013 last year, going 18-7 (7-4 B1G) and finishing with a No. 46 national ranking. The 2013 season resulted in a 10-1 conference record and a Big Ten Championship for Jacobson’s group. They also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The team loses two seniors from the 2017-18 team in Brianna Lashway and Katerina Matysova. Lashway competed in the top singles spot for much of last season, finishing 7-7 overall. She partnered with Paula Del Cueto Castillo to go 16-4 in doubles play last spring. Matysova was one of Nebraska’s top singles players, notching a 16-4 record in the spring. She also went 20-2 in doubles play on the year, partnering with Vasanti Shinde.

“The expectations are high and I'm confident our team will embrace the opportunities presented to them," said Jacobson. "We will certainly miss our graduated seniors, but we have a lot of returning talent that will be ready to step in and contribute this year.”

Claire Reifeis went a team-best 17-5 in singles play last spring and will have the opportunity to compete for the team’s number one singles spot. Vasanti Shinde (12-5) and Paula Del Cueto Castillo (11-8) won double digit singles play matches last spring and look to be consistent members of Nebraska’s top six. Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad also return as upperclassmen who contributed heavily to last year’s team.

Nebraska will also host the 2019 Big Ten Championships at the Dillon Tennis Center from April 25-28. The top ten teams in conference at the end of the regular season will be invited to the single elimination tournament. Since joining the Big Ten in 2011, Nebraska has never hosted the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament.

Start times for the fall events will be announced in the weeks leading up to each tournament.
