Huskers Sweep South Dakota Double Header
The Nebraska softball team opened its fall season by sweeping the double header against South Dakota on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers won game one 14-4 and won game two 7-4.
Tristen Edwards went 4-for-5 on the day, with three runs, six RBIs and one homer. Alyvia Simmons had an impressive day at the plate, going 4-for-8 in the leadoff spot with four runs and three RBIs. Freshman Courtney Wallace had a good day on offense, recording three hits, four runs and two RBIs.
Game 1: Freshman Lindsey Walljasper started in the circle for the Huskers and picked up the win. She pitched 4.0 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. She also had two strikeouts. Olivia Ferrell pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run. Karlee Seevers also pitched 1.0 inning of relief. She gave up one hit.
Nebraska scored first in the bottom of the first. Courtney Wallace reached on an error and stole second. Then, Edwards doubled to bring in the run.
The Coyotes responded in the top of the second, scoring three runs on two singles and a homer.
In the bottom of the second, Kneib singled and Boruff pinch ran for her. Cassidy drew a walk to put two runners on and Simmons singled to score Boruff, cutting the Coyotes lead to 3-2 at the end of the second inning.
Nebraska regained the lead in the third. Edwards hit a leadoff single and Owen drew a walk. Walljasper was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two walks and a hit batter gave the Huskers a 5-3 lead at the end of three.
South Dakota scored one run with three singles and a fielder’s choice in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nebraska brought 13 hitters to the plate and scored nine runs off five hits. Edwards and Walljasper doubled, while Simmons, Wallace and Owen each singled. The Huskers also drew two walks and had two hit batters.
Game 2: Freshman Courtney Wallace started for the Huskers and pitched 3.1 innings. She gave up four runs on nine hits and had two strikeouts. Regan Mergele got the win, pitching 3.2 innings and only giving up one hit.
South Dakota got right to work, scoring one run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Nebraska loaded the bases. Back-to-back singles from Simmons and Wallace put two runners on. Edwards was hit by a pitch to load them up. A fielder's choice scored one run and with runners on the corners, a planned double steal gave the Huskers a 2-1 lead.
The Huskers extended their lead in the second, scoring five runs with help from a pair of Coyote errors that put two runners on. Back-to-back hits from Simmons and Wallace scored two and a three-run homer by Edwards gave NU a 7-1 lead after two innings of play.
In the top of the third, three clutch hits with two outs from South Dakota plated one run. In the top of the fourth, the Coyotes loaded the bases with one out after two hits and a walk. A double scored two runs, but that would be it for the Coyote offense, as the score would stay the same the rest of the game.
Nebraska continues its fall season next weekend when it hosts North Dakota State for a double header on Sept. 23. The first game begins at noon. Admission to all fall games is free.
