Guthmiller Fires 71, NU Completes Cardinal Challenge
Simpsonville, Ky. - The Nebraska men's golf team concluded the final day of competition at the Cardinal Regional Challenge on Sunday. The Huskers finished with a team total of 880 after a third-round score of 303, coming in 16th place overall.
No. 17 Duke took home the title with a final score of 815 (-37). Louisville, the tournament’s host, finished in second place with a three-round total of 832 (-20). Wake Forest, South Florida and Mississippi State rounded out the top five with scores of 839 (-13), 844 (-8) and 850 (-2), respectively.
Senior Jace Guthmiller led the Huskers with a score of 213 (E) over three rounds. The Yankton, S.D. native fired a season-best first-round score of 69 (-2) on Friday afternoon before shooting a 73 (+2) on Saturday and a 71 (E) on Sunday. He led the team with three birdies in the third round and finished tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard.
"Right when we got to the course and played in the practice round, I knew it suited my game well," said Guthmiller. "I felt really comfortable out there and was able to shoot a -2 on the first day. It felt good to bounce back from last weekend. I thought I played really well this summer and it felt good to get back to playing that way."
Junior Tanner Owen had his best round of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, shooting a 68 (-3) to lead all Huskers. Owen fired in six birdies on Saturday alone. He finished off the weekend by shooting a 75 (+4) on Sunday, which resulted in him finishing tied for 38th overall with a three-round total of 216 (+3).
"This probably the most consistent I've played this season," said Owen. "I went into Saturday thinking there was no way I wasn't going to shoot in the 60s and everything kind of came together for me. I hit 16 of 18 greens and just felt like I was hitting everything the way I wanted to."
Senior Jackson Wendling, who finished first on the team in last weekend’s Rod Myers Invitational, fired a three-round score of 221 (+8) to finish third on the team and tied for 65th overall. Fellow senior Dylan McCabe shot for a three-round score of 232 (+19) to tie for 88th.
Freshman Tristan Nelko rounded out the NU lineup by shooting a 233 (+20) to tie for 90th. He fired a first-round score of 72 (+1) on Friday, which is a new career-low mark for him in his second tournament as a Husker.
The Huskers will travel home to prepare for the William Tucker Intercollegiate, which will take place Friday, Sept. 28 through Saturday, Sept. 29 at Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
