Boyer to Compete at Texas Tamale Houston Cup

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. -- Senior Toby Boyer will compete at the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup, a USTA/ITF Pro Circuit event, this weekend in Houston, Texas.

Boyer will face No. 7 Tim Ruehl on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in the singles qualifying round. Ruehl is a sophomore at Arizona State University, and placed a 14-8 record in 2017-18 with the Sun Devils.

The tournament will feature nearly 100 players from around the world that are ranked between 250 and 800 in the ATP Rankings, with several current and former college athletes. The event will take place at the George R. Brown Tennis Center at Rice University. Boyer will play the singles qualifying round from Saturday through Monday (Oct. 6-8). If he advances, the tournament's main draw runs from Tuesday through Sunday (Oct. 9-14).

Boyer has always been one of the leading players throughout his career with the Huskers. Last year, he produced the best season of his career and one of the most individually successful campaigns in Nebraska history. In the fall, Boyer reached the ITA Central Regional Singles final. He was only the second Husker to reach the event finals since Karl Falkland won the tournament in 1993. Following the Regionals, Boyer was the only player representing Nebraska in the ITA National Fall Championships.

Overall, the Ham Lake, Minn. native posted a 26-14 record in 2017-18, including a 12-9 mark in the spring while playing almost exclusively out of the No. 1 spot.
