Boyer, Klousia Fall Short at ITA Regionals

By NU Athletic Communications

Tulsa, Okla. -- Senior Toby Boyer and junior Micah Klousia fell just short of a championship match on Sunday after a tough 6-3, 6-4 semifinal loss to No. 9 Vinny Gillespie/Barny Thorold (Drake) at the ITA Central Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.

On Friday, Boyer and Klousia upset the tournament's highest-seeded duo in the round of 32 with an 8-7 (5) win over No. 1 Oscar Mesquida/Adam Sanjurjo (Oklahoma) before knocking off Stratton Brown/Max Mease (Creighton), 8-6 in the round of 16. The Husker pair overcame Boriss Kamdem/Thelwall Jones (Tulsa), 8-5 on Saturday to advance to the semis.

“Micah (Klousia) and Toby (Boyer) really started to gain some confidence after winning a few good doubles matches,” Head Coach Sean Maymi said. “It was great to see them have some success in this tournament.”

Nebraska wrapped up the ITA Regionals with a total of 10 singles wins and four doubles wins. In singles play, Klousia and freshman Victor Moreno Lozano reached the round of 32, while Boyer, junior Chris Dean and freshman William Gleason made it to the round of 64.

“Overall, we have been gaining confidence in practice and training, but this tournament allowed us to put it under the pressures of a match,” Maymi said. “We have learned a lot from each match and will use the remainder of the fall to get better and prepare for the dual match season.”

Up next, the Huskers travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Oct. 26-28 for the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championships.
