Smith Earns Top 10 Finish in Las Vegas

Kate Smith fired her third consecutive round under-par with a 71 to capture a tie for eighth place in a 90-player field at the UNLV Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., on Tuesday.

Smith, a junior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., closed the three-round tournament on the par-72, 6,343-yard layout at the Boulder Creek Golf Club with a season-best six-under-par total of 210 (71-68-71).

Smith, who notched the 11th top-10 tournament finish of her career, led Nebraska to a 10th-place team finish in a solid 17-team field. The Huskers closed the tournament with a final-round 291 to finish at 875.

Sophomore Noor Ahmed (Folsom, Calif.) completed one of the best tournament scores of her career with a final-round 72 on Tuesday. She finished the three-day event at one-over-par 217 for her best total of the season and second-best of her career in a tie for 27th individually.

Redshirt freshman Kirsten Baete (Beatrice, Neb.) shot her best round of the tournament with a one-over-par 73 to give the Huskers their No. 3 score of the round. Baete finished in a tie for 77th at 231 for the tournament.

True freshman Vanessa Bouvet (Brunei) completed Nebraska's team score with a 75. Bouvet finished in a tie for 47th at 222 for the tournament.

Junior Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) added a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for 74th individually at 230, while freshman Megan Whittaker closed the tournament in a tie for 82nd at 233 (79-76-78) while playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup.

Oregon State won the team title with a three-round total of 838 (-26), while Tulsa finished as the runner-up four strokes back at 842 (-22). Augusta took third at 846, while Long Beach State (856) and Idaho (857) rounded out the top five.

Tulsa's Lorena Tseng took medalist honors with a 13-under-par 203, including a sizzling final round of 65 (-7). Fresno State's Brigitte Thibault was the runner-up with an 11-under 205.

Nebraska makes a quick turnaround to conclude fall tournament action at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii, Oct. 30-31.
