Huskers Fall In Season Debut to Reigning National Champions
Los Angeles -- The No. 11 Nebraska women's gymnastics team fell to reigning National Champions UCLA 197.250-195.700 at the Pauley Pavilion on Friday night.
The Huskers kept the meet close for three rotations before the No. 1 Bruins pulled away after three 9.95 routines by Gracie Kramer, Kyla Ross and Katelyn Ohasi on floor exercise. Junior Taylor Houchin won the Huskers only event title taking the uneven bars title with a score of 9.925. The loss snaps a five-meet opener winning streak as the Huskers begin the season 0-1 for the first time since the 2013 season.
Nebraska began the meet on uneven bars and scored a 49.050. Big Ten Gymnast to Watch Houchin hit her event-winning score of 9.95, while All-Americans Megan Schweihofer and Sienna Crouse posted scores of 9.80 and 9.85, respectively. Crouse would go to finish fourth. Freshman Sarah Hargrove led off for the Huskers and landed a score of 9.75 in her collegiate debut. Likewise, fellow freshman Adnerys De Jesus hit a 9.725. Megan Verceles Carr performed a bars routine for the first time in her career and posted a score of 9.675.
On vault, UCLA's Ross posted a near perfect score of 9.975 and would take the vault title. Felicia Hano would go on to post a score of 9.90 as well as Pauline Tratz who hit a 9.80. Two Bruins would earn scores of 9.75 and Nia Dennis rounded out UCLA with a score of 9.20. UCLA posted a score of 49.175 to lead the Huskers' 49.050 after the first rotation.
Houchin led the way for the Huskers with a score of 9.825 on vault placing third. Crouse would go on to hit a 9.80 and De Jesus a 9.775. Freshman Kaylee Quinn began her career with a 9.75 and Verceles Carr rounded out the Huskers with a score of 9.55.
On bars, two Bruins would finish with a score of 9.875, while two others would finish with a score of 9.825. Anna Glenn hit a 9.80, while Grace Glenn posted a score of 9.20. UCLA combined for a team score of 49.175 on bars while Nebraska had a respectable 48.800 on vault. UCLA led Nebraska 98.375-97.850 at the halfway point.
NU moved onto floor where Crouse hit a score of 9.875 and finished tied for fourth. Four Huskers finished with a score of 9.75 including Schweihofer, Houchin, De Jesus and freshman Abby Johnston. Junior Sierra Hassel, coming off a season ending injury last season, finished with a score of 9.675.
On beam, UCLA began to pull away with Ohashi posting a score of 9.90 and taking the beam title. Two Bruins finished with a score of 9.875, while Ross hit a 9.85. Brielle Nguyen and Dennis rounded out the Bruins with scores of 9.825 and 9.725, respectively leaving the Bruins with a beam score of 49.325, while on floor Nebraska finished with a score of 498.875. UCLA held their lead over the Huskers 147.700-146.725.
Coming down to beam for a chance at a Huskers comeback, Houchin and Hassel both hit a score of 9.85. Schweihofer and Crouse would both post a score of 9.80 while Verceles Carr and sophomore Makayla Curtis would round out the Huskers with scores of 9.675 and 9.075, respectively.
On floor, the Bruins did what the Bruins do best. UCLA posted three scores of 9.95 by three different gymnasts, while Dennis hit a score of 9.875. Tratz and Felicia Hano would finish out the Bruins with scores of 9.825 and 9.225. UCLA combined for a meet-high team score of 49.550, on beam the Huskers' comeback bid falls short as they post a team score of 48.975.
In the all-around, Houchin finished with a score of 39.350, thanks to her winning-bars score of 9.925. Crouse did not score lower than 9.80 on any event on the night. Schweihofer scored a 39.000 for Nebraska and UCLA's Ross finished the night with a score of 39.650.
Nebraska will return home for a home meet against No. 15 Washington on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. CT, which will be a part of Nebraska's Tumble N' Rumble promotion, as the Nebraska wrestling team will compete in the Devaney Center at the same time against Northern Iowa.
