NU Falls to Gonzaga, 4-1

Durham, N.C., -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Gonzaga, 4-1 in the consolation match of the ITA Weekend Kick-Off. This weekend’s competition was hosted by Duke University at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Facility.

Starting the morning with doubles, the Huskers dropped sets at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.

At No. 3, the team of Marina Cozac and Jeannie Lozowski got out to a quick start taking a 3-2 lead over Haruna Tsuruta and Kate Ketels. Cozac and Lozowski were unable to close out the match, falling 6-3.

Jessica Aragon and Vasanti Shinde battled back and forth with Gonzaga’s Domonique Garley and Sara Komer. The Big Red’s No. 2 pair eventually fell 7-5 to the Bulldogs.

Claire Reifeis and Hayley Haakenstad were tied 5-5 with Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas when doubles play concluded.

The Huskers entered singles competition with the same lineup as their first round match vs. Old Dominion.

Vasanti Shinde took on nationally ranked Sophie Whittle (No. 5) at No. 1 singles. Shinde fell 6-2, 6-0 to the first team All-WCC singles player.

At the No. 6 spot, Jeannie Lozowski played Gonzaga’s Sara Komer. Lozowski fell in a close first set 5-7 and was defeated in the second 6-2.

With a 3-0 advantage, the Bulldogs were one win away from closing out the match.

Junior, Claire Reifeis was able to maintain her undefeated singles record with a come-from-behind victory over Graciela Rosas. After dropping the first set 6-0, Reifeis came out strong in the second set, picking up a 6-3 win and forcing a deciding third set. The Indianapolis, Ind., native picked up the Huskers lone win on the day with a dominant 6-2 third set triumph.

Marina Cozac, Jessica Aragon and Hayley Haakenstad all fought to keep the Huskers alive. At No. 5, Haakenstad forced a first set tiebreaker vs. Sara Komer, but would fall 7-6 (1), 6-2. With that win, play concluded and the Bulldogs claimed the match, 4-1. 

The Huskers return home next weekend to take on Kansas State, UMKC and South Dakota at the Dillon Tennis Center.
