Trio Qualifies for Winter Cup Finals
Las Vegas, Nev. – Kyle King, Anton Stephenson and Griffin Kehler advanced to the Winter Cup Finals after stellar performances at the preliminary sessions on Feb. 15. The finals will take place on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 9:15 p.m. (CT).
King finished 41st overall with a score of 65.55, including a top-ten finish on vault. The Mesquite, Texas, native tied for 21st on floor (13.30), tied for 22nd on pommel horse (12.55) and tied for 19th on high bar (13.05). This is the second consecutive year King has advanced to finals and the third time since starting his college career.
Stephenson finished 17th overall with a score of 78.80. The Fishers, Ind., native place sixth on parallel bars (13.65) and tied for tenth on vault (14.40) and 17th on (13.40). This is the second time Stephenson has participated in the preliminaries but the first time he has advanced to the finals. The last time Stephenson participated in the Winter Cup was as a freshman in 2016.
Sophomore Griffin Kehler placed 24th in the all-around with a score of 77.90, including one top-five and one top-15 finish. The Frisco, Texas, native placed fourth on high bar (13.75) and placed eleventh on floor (13.65).
King, Stephenson and Kehler are three of 28 athletes who will compete for six spots on the U.S. Men’s National Team. Performances at finals will help determine the 12 men who will comprise the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team through the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Mo. Following the first-day of competition, the top six ranked all-around athletes automatically qualified for the 2019 senior national team.
Evan Kriley finished 44th overall with a score of 51.75 and will be an alternate for tomorrow’s competition. The Tampa, Fla., native finished eighth on pommel horse (13.35) and tied for 25th on high bar (12.95).
