Huskers Finish 12th at Lamkin San Diego Classic

By NU Athletic Communications

San Diego, Calif., – The Nebraska men’s golf team finished up its final round at the Lamkin San Diego Classic this afternoon. The Huskers shot 890 (+26) during the two-day, 54-hole tournament to finish in 12th place at the 15-team tournament. NU carded a 294 (+6) as a team in round one and 298 (+10) in each of the final two rounds.

With his team only a few strokes out of finishing in the top half of the field, first-year Head Coach Mark Hankins saw several things that his team can build on.

“Overall, I was proud of our effort this weekend,” Hankins said. “We were playing really well in round two before we had a couple tough holes to end the day. This was our first tournament of the spring and we’re only going to get better from here.”

Arizona State (-10) took first place while Texas (-9) and St. Mary’s (-4) rounded out the top three.

Effingham, Ill., native Jackson Wendling finished first among Huskers after firing a 219 (+3) over three rounds to finish in a tie for 20th overall. Wendling led all Huskers with 13 birdies on the tournament. It’s his first top-25 finish since the 2017 Bayou City Collegiate Classic, when he finished in a tie for 22nd after shooting a 218 (+2).

Wendling talked about how his performance is a direct result of the work he has been putting in at practice.

“I’ve been putting a bigger emphasis on my putting at practice this spring,” Wendling said. “I felt like that really helped me this week. I thought I rolled it really well and made some clutch putts in big moments. I’m looking forward to getting back to work so I can build off this.

Coach Hankins was complimentary of how one of his most experienced players competed this week.

“Jackson had a few goals that he wanted to reach coming in his senior season and he took several steps in the right direction this week,” Hankins said. “He stayed confident, played smart and put three really solid rounds together.”

Tanner Owen carded a 76 (+3) in the third round to follow up a 75 (+3) in round two and a first-round score of 74 (+2) to finish the tournament at 225 (+9). Graduate-transfer senior Jay Cottam carded 75’s in all three rounds to finish tied with Tanner Owen at 225 (+9). They tied for 50th overall.

Jace Guthmiller and Cameron Jones tied for 64th as they both had 54-hole scores of 228 (+12). Guthmiller bounced back from his second-round 81 (+9) to shoot a 74 (+2) on a day when he tied for a team-high with four birdies in the final round.

Up Next: The Huskers will go on spring break from March 16-23 to train at Whisper Rock Golf Club and other golf courses in the Scottsdale, Ariz. area. NU returns to tournament action on March 29 when the team travels to Palo Alto, Calif., for The Goodwin, a three-day, 54-hole tournament hosted at Stanford University Golf Club.
