Huskers Fall Short at No. 23 Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich.—The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to the No. 23 Michigan Wolverines Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. Following today’s loss, NU moves to 8-9 on the season and 0-2 on the road.

 

Doubles

The match commenced with three neck and neck doubles matchups. At No. 2, Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon were unable to close out their match, falling in a 6-4 to the Wolverines. Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad got off to a hot start at No. 3 and would pick up the 6-4 win over Michigan.

 

With a split score, the doubles point came down to Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac at the No. 1 position. The senior duo battled back-and-forth with the fellow seniors from Michigan, Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor. NU battled, but were unable to secure the victory for the Huskers.

Trailing 0-1 after doubles play, the Huskers moved into singles competition.

 

Singles

The Big Red struggled in singles play in Michigan. Marina Cozac was the first to fall, dropping her match at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2 to Chiara Lommer.

 

Junior, Claire Reifeis got down early in her match vs. All-Big Ten senior No. 28 Brienne Minor. Reifeis was able to build some momentum at the conclusion of the first set, but it wouldn’t be enough. Reifeis fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and moves to 11-4 on the season.

 

Jeannie Lozowski and Jessica Aragon would simultaneously drop their matches to ranked players at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Lozowski is now 2-2 at the No. 3 spot and Aragon moves to 5-4 playing out of the No. 5 position.

 

With the Wolverines already clinching the match win, play continued on courts 1 and 6.

Junior, Hayley Haakenstad was unable to pick up the win at No. 6 singles, falling to Alyvia Jones of Michigan, 6-2, 6-2.

 

Vasanti Shinde gave her all in a battle vs. No. 4 Kate Fahey. Shinde led early in the first set, but would fall to the 2018 Big Ten Player of the year 6-7(1), 6-1. Fahey’s win gave No. 22 Michigan the 7-0 win over the Huskers.

Nebraska will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they are set to take on Michigan State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich.
