Huskers Fall to No. 14 Buckeyes

Lincoln, Neb., -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes in their Big Ten home opener. The Huskers were outside at the Dillon Tennis Center for the first time this season in the 5-2 loss.



The pair of Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad were unable to recover after slow start, falling 1-6 to Isabelle Boulais and Danielle Wolf of Ohio State at the No. 3 position.


Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon played a tight, back-and-forth match against Ohio State’s Kolie Allen and Andrea Ballinger. Despite taking the 5-4 lead, Reifeis and Aragon were unable to close out the match, falling 7-5.


With the double’s decision going in favor of the Buckeyes, Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac did not finish their match vs. Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet at No. 1. The match was in a tiebreaker at the conclusion of doubles play.



Down 1-0 in the match, the Huskers fell behind early in singles play. Freshman, Jessica Aragon dropped her set to Luna Dormet at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0, giving the No. 14 Buckeyes a 2-0 advantage in the match.


Next to conclude was Jeannie Lozowski at No. 3. Lozowski struggled in her first set against Kolie Allen, dropping the first set 6-0 and the second 6-4.


At No. 1 singles, Vasanti Shinde was unable to stop Shiori Fukuda, falling 6-3, 6-1.


With the OSU leading 4-0 in the match, play continued at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6


Playing out of No. 6, Hayley Haakenstad fell 6-2, 6-3 to Mary Beth Hurley. Haakenstad moves to 6-4 playing out of the No. 6 position.


At No. 4 singles, Marina Cozac gave the Big Red their first singles win of the day with a dominant 6-0, 7-5 victory over Ohio State’s Danielle Wolf. The senior from Chicago, Ill., had a strong opening set and was able to close out the match in a tight second set.


Junior, Claire Reifeis closed out the match with an impressive win over No. 71 Isabelle Boulais. Reifeis took the first set in a tiebreaker (7-3) and closed out the day with a 7-5 win in the second. Reifeis improves to a 12-5 record overall and a 7-3 record playing out of the No. 2 spot.
