Huskers Fall Short to Indiana, 5-2

Lincoln, Neb.—The Nebraska women’s tennis team falls to 8-13 on the season (0-5 B1G) with Friday afternoon’s 5-2 loss to Indiana, while the Hoosiers improve to 13-7 (3-2 B1G). The Huskers kicked off the match with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point and take the 1-0 lead. 


Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad had a strong showing at the No. 3 position, taking the 6-2 win over Michelle McKamey and Somer Henry of Indiana. 


At No.2, Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon came back from a 1-4 deficit to steal the match from Indiana’s Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen, 7-5. With that win, Reifeis and Aragon improve to 9-4 as a doubles pair. 


Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac led 5-4 in their match at the No.1 spot when doubles concluded. 


Despite the 1-0 advantage, the Huskers were unable to close out the match in singles competition. At No. 4,Marina Cozac dropped her match to Indiana’s Jelly Bozovic, 6-4, 6-3. 


Junior, Claire Reifeis transitioned to the No. 1 singles spot after spending last weekend playing out of No. 2. The Indianapolis, Ind., native was unable to close out her match to Madison Appel of Indiana, falling 6-1, 2-6, 3-6.


Playing out of No. 6, Hayley Haakenstad picked up NU’s lone singles point. The junior took down Indiana’s Somer Henry in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. 


With the match score tied at 2-2, freshman Jessica Aragon took on Michelle Mckamey at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set 4-6 and fighting back to take the second 6-3, Aragon couldn’t hold on to get the win, dropping the final set 6-1.


The Hoosiers just needed one more win to clinch the match. After taking the first set in a tiebreaker, Jeannie Lozowski couldn’t hold on to top Caitlin Bernard. Lozowski fell at No. 3, 7-6, 3-6, 2-6. 


Playing out of the No. 2 spot, Senior Vasanti Shinde was the last Husker on the court. The Pune India native took the first set from Natalie Whalen with a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker victory. In the second set, Shinde fell to Whalen 3-6. With Shinde down 2-3 in the third set, the match retired, and the Hoosiers received the point making the final score 5-2.

The Huskers are back at the Dillon Tennis Center this Sunday to take on the Purdue Boilermakers at noon CT. Free donuts and bagels will be available to fans.
