By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to 8-14 (0-6 Big Ten) after a hard-fought, 4-3 defeat to the Purdue Boilermakers today. With the win, Purdue moves to 6-11 (1-5 Big Ten) on the year. The Huskers took the doubles point but could only manage victories in two of the six singles matches. Claire Reifeis and Marina Cozac each earned singles wins for their team as NU was just one victory away from notching its first Big Ten win of the year.

Doubles:

Juniors Hayley Haakenstad and Jeannie Lozowski moved to 6-7 on the year together as a doubles pair as they made quick work of Purdue’s Zala Dovnik and Seira Shimizu. The No. 3 duo for NU took a 6-1 victory to get the Huskers off to a fast start. Haakenstad and Lozowski won both of their doubles matches together this weekend.

Jessica Aragon and Claire Reifeis sealed the doubles point for their team after defeating Silvia Ambrosio and Amina Mukhametshina (Purdue), 6-3. Aragon and Reifeis are a team-best 10-5 together on the doubles court this season. Nine of those 10 wins have come at the No. 2 doubles position, including the one today.

Seniors Marina Cozac and Vasanti Shinde’s match went unfinished at the No. 1 spot. They trailed 4-3 at the time of completion.

Singles:

Purdue’s Caitlin Calkins evened the score at one after she defeated NU junior Jeannie Lozowski, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Claire Reifeis quickly put the Huskers back on top with her team-best 14th singles win of the year as she defeated Purdue’s Ena Babic 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 2.

Huskers freshman Jessica Aragon then fell 6-4, 6-2 to Alex Sabe at the No. 5 spot to tie the team score up once again, this time at 2-2. The Boilermakers took their first lead after Silvia Ambrosio clinched her match at No. 1 singles against Vasanti Shinde in a back-and-forth match. Ambrosio came out on top by the score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

With her team trailing 3-2, Chicago, Ill., native Marina Cozac grinded out a hard-fought, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) win. The victory was her sixth singles win of the spring and her third in Big Ten play.

With the final score of the dual meet up in the balance, it all came down to Hayley Haakenstad’s match at the No. 6 spot against Purdue’s Zala Dovnik. A junior out of Chanhassen, Minn., Haakenstad fell just short against Dovnik, dropping the match by the score of 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 4-6.

The Huskers will have two more opportunities for home victories next weekend against Maryland and Rutgers, who currently sit in 10th and 12th place, respectively, in the Big Ten standings.
