Huskers Defeat Terps, Earn First Big Ten Victory

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team earned its first Big Ten victory of the season on a beautiful Friday afternoon outside at the Dillon Tennis Center. The Huskers moved to 9-14 (1-6 Big Ten) after a convincing 6-1 win over the Maryland Terrapins. With the loss, Maryland dropped to 3-13 (1-5 Big Ten) on the season.


NU took the doubles point for the third straight match after victories by Jessica Aragon and Claire Reifeis at No. 2 and Hayley Haakenstad and Jeannie Lozowski at No. 3. Five of the six Husker starters earned singles victories in the team’s win.



Jessica Aragon and Claire Reifeis were the first to finish their doubles match. They combined to dispatch Maryland’s Anastasiia Gevel and Arnelle Sullivan, 6-3. Aragon and Reifeis are a team-best 11-5 together on the doubles court this season, with 10 of those wins coming at No. 2.


Juniors Hayley Haakenstad and Jeannie Lozowski moved to 7-7 on the year as a doubles pair as they defeated Maryland’s Zoe Kulkarni and Amber Policare to clinch the doubles point for NU. The two juniors won their second straight doubles match, 6-2, to move to 4-3 in Big Ten doubles play.


Seniors Marina Cozac and Vasanti Shinde’s match went unfinished at the No. 1 spot. They trailed 5-3 at the time of completion.



Huskers freshman Jessica Aragon put together the best performance of her season in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over Maryland’s Amber Policare. The victory was Aragon’s second career Big Ten win, and it put her team up 2-0.


Junior Jeannie Lozowski put away her opponent, Anastasiia Gevel, in a 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 3 spot. She’s now won four matches at No. 3 this season.


Indianapolis, Ind., native Claire Reifeis moved to 15-6 (4-3 Big Ten) on the year with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Maryland’s Millie Stretton to clinch the dual meet for the Huskers. Reifeis has now won her past two matches and leads the team with 15 singles victories overall.


Maryland picked up a point at No. 2 to bring the score to 4-1 as Eva Alexandrova picked up a win by default over NU’s Vasanti Shinde, 4-6, 6-2, 3-0.


Marina Cozac came from behind to earn her fourth Big Ten victory of the season. She fell in the first set, 6-2, but came back to win set two, 6-0, and set three, 6-4.


Junior Hayley Haakenstad won her third singles match in her last four tries as she grinded out a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory at the No. 6 spot over Maryland’s Zoe Kulkarni to seal her team’s convincing 6-1 win.


Up Next:

The Huskers will celebrate three seniors, Marina Cozac, Elizabeth Gould and Vasanti Shinde, on Sunday morning during a senior day ceremony before the dual meet against Rutgers. The ceremony will begin at 8:40 a.m. and doubles play starts at 9 a.m. CT.


NU travels to Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday, April 13 to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The regular season concludes on April 21, after a two-day road trip to take on Minnesota (April 20) and Wisconsin (April 21).
