Huskers Head to Iowa City to Close Regular Season

Iowa City, Iowa., - The Nebraska men's golf team travels to the 10th annual Hawkeye Invitational this weekend at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa. Home of the Iowa's men's and women's golf teams, the par-71 course has a USGA course rating of 74.6 and a slope rating of 134, stretching over 6,884 yards.
Huskers first-year Head Coach Mark Hankins is excited for his team to build off their second-place finish at the Husker Invitational.
“This entire spring we have been competitive and trending in the right direction,” Hankins said. “The Hawkeye Invitational is a solid Big Ten/Midwest field. We need five players engaged and work to post 15 good scores this week. If we retain and use all of the competitive knowledge learned from our tournament this past weekend we will put ourselves, individually and as a team, in a position to contend for a top finish.”
Huskers History at the Hawkeye Invitational:
NU finished 10th in the 13-team tournament last season, with Tanner Owen leading his team by shooting a 149 (+7) to finish tied for 14th overall. The Huskers have competed at the Hawkeye Invitational for the past nine years.
NU is joined in a field of 12 teams that includes: DePaul, Eastern Michigan, No. 30 Illinois, No. 42 Iowa, Indiana, No. 33 Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, UMKC, and Wisconsin (Golfstat Rankings).
-Redshirt junior Mitch Klooz made his first stroke play tournament appearance as a starter for NU at the Husker Invitational. He finished tied for 12th overall after carding a 36-hole score of 150 (+8). He tied Junior Tanner Owen who also posted 150 with rounds of 79-71.
-Five Huskers competed individually this past weekend at Firethorn. Plymouth, Minn., native Tristan Nelko had the best performance of the individuals, tying for 18th after shooting a 152 (+10).
-Junior Cameron Jones and Senior Jackson Wendling finished tied for 26th while Patrick Clare and Sean Song tied for 34th and Dylan McCabe took 36th.
-Tanner Owen was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on April 10 after firing a 54-hole score of 214 (+4) to tie for 19th in a field of 132 golfers at The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University. It’s the first time a Husker has won Big Ten Golfer of the Week since Jackson Wendling did so on Sept. 4, 2015.

NU took second place at the Husker Invitational this past weekend at Firethorn Golf Club. Redshirt senior Jay Cottam led the Huskers finishing tied for fourth place after shooting 74-69 for a one-over-par 143. Fellow senior Jace Guthmiller posted (+6) for a share of 10th.
The Huskers begin postseason play on April 26-28 in Philadelphia, Pa., at the Big Ten Championships. The Philly Cricket Club will host the three-day conference championships.
