Huskers Take 11th, Owen Top 30 at Hawkeye Invitational

Iowa City, Iowa., - The Nebraska men's golf team finished in 11th place at the 2019 Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. NU shot 304-278-283 to finish with a 54-hole team total of 866 (+14).

 

The host Iowa Hawkeyes took home the tournament title with a three-round score of 809 (-43). Illinois finished as the runner-up (-37) in the 13-team tournament.

 

Tanner Owen had the best performance out of the Husker golfers this weekend, finishing with a 54-hole score of 214 (+1). Owen shot consecutive 68’s (-3) in the final two rounds after posting a 78 (+7) in the first round. He had four birdies and an eagle in today’s third round to finish in a tie for 29th in the 74-golfer field.

 

Seniors Jay Cottam and Jace Guthmiller each finished in the mid-40s individually. Cottam went 78-69-71 to finish at 218 (+5) and Guthmiller 75-73-71 to finish at 219 (+6). Cottam has now shot under par in two out of his last four rounds after posting a 69 (-2) yesterday and in the second round at last week’s Husker Invitational. Cottam tied for 43rd while Guthmiller tied for 48th at the Hawkeye Invitational.

 

Jackson Wendling completed his tournament by firing a 74 (+3) in round three. He went 76-70-74 on the weekend for a 54-hole total of 220 (+7) to finish tied for 52nd. His second-round score of 70 (-1) was his first round under par this season and the 10th of his career. His excellent second round was highlighted by an eagle on the sixth hole (par-5, 524 yards).

 

Redshirt junior Mitch Klooz rounded out the group of NU starters by finishing with a three-round score of 221 (+8) to tie for 54th. Klooz has now participated in the Big Ten Match Play Championships, Husker Invitational and Hawkeye Invitational this spring since joining the Huskers via graduate transfer in January.

 

The Huskers finished the weekend with 44 birdies and two eagles as a team.

   

Up Next:

The Huskers will head back to Lincoln for a week of practice before going to Philadelphia, Pa., next weekend for the three-day Big Ten Championships at the Philly Cricket Club. The tournament will begin Friday, April 26 and the teams will play one round per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
