Husker Legends Share Wisdom at the Life After Sport Seminar

By NU Athletic Communications

Life Skills hosted the Life After Sport Seminar on Monday, April 22nd in the Devaney Era Club located in West Memorial Stadium. A seminar required for all student-athletes exhausting athletic eligibility, Life After Sport provided attendees some additional insight on what to prepare for as they make the transition away from athletics.

Highlighting the event were two keynote speakers and Husker alumni, Brooke Delano (volleyball) and Demoine Adams (football).  Each spoke on what the transition away from sport was like for them and delivered messages of encouragement and advice to attendees on what was to come next.  Delano highlighted how connections made at Nebraska will last a lifetime and to never underestimate the positive impact the Husker student-athlete experience can have both personally and in the community.  She also expressed the importance of building relationships with a wide array of people which will help to open doors in the future.  Adams delivered a message focusing on how skills learned in athletics like leadership, resiliency, and competitiveness translate into life after athletics and how to use those skills to have a successful transition away from college athletics. He also emphasized taking advantage of the platform provided by being a Husker student-athlete and using that platform to make a difference.

Other Husker letterwinners represented at the seminar were Senior Director of Development Operations, Mattie Fowler (softball) and TD Ameritrade Trade Manager, Cole Ingram (track & field) who spoke about the Husker Athletic Fund/N Club and financial/retirement planning, respectively.  Other guests and topics included UNL College of Business Administration’s Director of Career Services, Rachel Larson, who expanded on career development best practices, Athletic Psychologist, Chad Doerr, who addressed the psychological impact of transitioning away from an athletic identity, and Assistant Director of Performance Nutrition, Lisa Kopecky, who provided tips on smart grocery shopping and nutritional advice following the end of an athletic career.
