Redemption For Huskers In Consolation
Charlottesville, Va. - After dropping to consolation matches from the main draw upon their loss to No. 10 Miami, the 17th-ranked Huskers sought redemption against No. 21 Vanderbilt. The Huskers (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) faced a tough team against the Commodores (4-2, 0-0 SEC) but emerged victorious on a 4-3 scoreline.
The Huskers have had a hot season thus far in doubles and snatched the lead with the first point in doubles play. At the No. 3 position Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska fell to Vanderbilt's Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn 4-8. The Huskers quickly regained ground at the No. 2 spot with Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein ousting the Commodores' Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares 8-6.
Nebraska sealed the point and the lead at the No. 1 position where undefeated duo Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova edged Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton 8-5.
Singles play started with a Nebraska lead at 1-0 but they lost the advantage quickly. The Commodores grabbed two victories with Georgina Sellyn defeating Huskers' Janine Weinreich 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot before Vanderbilt's No. 91 Marie Casares toppled Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 6-1.
The score was 2-1 with Vanderbilt ahead when Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke squashed Vanderbilt's No. 115 Frances Altick 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 position to level the score at 2-2. The Huskers' Izabella Zgierska fell to Vanderbilt's Ashleigh Antal 3-6, 3-6 at the No. 6 singles to give the Commodores the advantage once again at 3-2.
The victor was decided with two close matches at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt took the No. 1 victory by sweeping Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira 6-1, 6-4 to even the score line at 3-3. The last match was extremely suspenseful heading to a third set at the No. 2 position before Nebraska's Patricia Veresova emerged victorious over Vanderbilt's No. 102 Courtney Colton 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to secure the match and the victory for the Huskers at 4-3.
"Every team out here is tough," said Associate Head Coach Hayden Perez for the Huskers on the win, "It took a great team effort by the girls again today in order to get it done. Our doubles has been really impressive and if wee keep that going into tommorrow, then anything is possible for the Huskers."
