Nebraska Fights Off Hawkeyes on Senior Night

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 10 Nebraska men's gymnastics team overthrew the No. 9 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, setting a season-high team score of 427.700. The Huskers also faced No. 7 Minnesota, who won the meet with a 430.300.

NU battled with the Golden Gophers for the lead throughout the night, grabbing it from Minnesota after the fourth rotation. A small mistake from the Huskers on parallel bars allowed for Minnesota to jump back to the top of the team overall in the fifth rotation.

Nebraska started the night on floor, where they earned a team total of 70.850 on the event. Freshman Sam Chamberlain started the Huskers strong with a personal-best 14.25 on his routine. NU's momentum continued, coming to a peak with All-American Grant Perdue's 15.15 on floor. The sophomore took home the individual event title on floor, finishing 0.65 points ahead of Minnesota's Sean Bauer, who came in second on the event.

The Huskers then moved to pommel horse for their second rotation. Nebraska struggled to perform on the event, seeing four of their five gymnasts earn scores below 14. Junior Eric Schryver capped off the rotation solidly, grabbing a 14.90 and second overall on the event.

NU continued to improve their performance on rings for the third rotation. Earning a season-best team score of 72.050, the Huskers saw all five of their scores above a 14. Sophomore Robbie Kocks took home second overall on the event by grabbing a 15.00, his new personal best.

The Huskers began the second half of the meet 3.3 points behind the Golden Gophers. For their fourth rotation, the team moved to vault, where all five competitors posted a 14.05 or better. Nebraska finished out the event with a team score of 73.600, earning them the event title. Perdue (15.25) also took home the vault title after posting the only vault of the night over 15.

Nebraska lost the team lead after their turn on parallel bars. Junior Wyatt Aycock showed significant improvement on his routine, earning a 14.75 and third overall on the event. Chamberlain posted a 14.70 on the event, just after teammate CJ Schaaf earned a 12.80. Mark Ringle and Eric Schryver also grabbed scores above 14.

NU rounded out the meet on high bar. The Huskers' starting gymnasts showed improvement from their last meet against No. 3 Oklahoma. Junior Micah Christensen started off the rotation with a 14.20 routine, followed by sophomore Josh Ungar earning a 14.85, the highest score on the event for the Huskers. Ungar also earned second place overall on the event. Ringle started his routine off strong, but struggled to keep his momentum throughout the routine and was forced to drop off the bar early. He remounted and stuck his dismount, but the struggles caused his score to fall to a 13.35.

Schaaf finished the day with a solid82.400 all around score.

The Huskers will travel to Champaign, Ill., next week to face the No. 6 Illini. The meet will be at 4 p.m. CST.
