A member of the No. 10 Nebraska women's gymnastics team has taken home a Big Ten weekly award for the fifth time this season, the conference announced Monday. Junior Emily Wong earned Co-Gymnast of the Week honors after winning or tying for four individual titles in Nebraska's victory over Iowa State at the Masters Classic last Friday. Wong's award is her second career accolade, with both honors coming this season.
Wong's award comes after the junior finished in the top two of every event at the 23rd-annual Masters Classic last Friday, including first-place finishes on bars (9.925), beam (9.90), floor (9.95) and in the all-around (39.600). She also posted a second-place effort on vault (9.85) against Iowa State. Wong's floor score matched her career-high, while her all-around victory marked her fourth such title in seven meets for Nebraska.
Wong's performance also etched her name into the Masters Classic record books for the Huskers: her all-around score of 39.600 is tied for the third-highest in Masters Classic history. She also earned spots in the Classic's top-10 all-time performance lists, coming in at ties for 10th on bars, 10th on beam and sixth on floor. Wong was an integral part of Nebraska's 197.050 team performance on Friday night, the fourth-highest team score in the meet's history.
Wong and the Huskers will practice this week before opening next week with their final home meet this season. Nebraska will face conference opponent Iowa on Monday, March 4 at 6 p.m. CST at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Fans can obtain tickets prior to the event by visiting Huskers.com, or by calling the Nebraska Ticket Office at 1-800-8BIGRED.
