Herrmann, Treyz Capture Big Ten Indoor Title

West Lafayette, Ind. - Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz claimed a doubles title for the Nebraska men's tennis team at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday.

The victory gave the Huskers their first-ever championship at the Big Ten's annual indoor singles and doubles competition.

"It was a great day for the University of Nebraska men's tennis team as sophomore Marc Herrmann and junior Beau Treyz became the first-ever Big Ten Indoors Doubles shampions as they won the 2013 title at Purdue University today," Nebraska Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. "Coach Fungai Tongoona and I are very excited to have these young men accomplish this goal of winning this tournament and representing the University of Nebraska in true honor. These guys are what this program represents: hard work, perseverance, being professional and competing hard so good things will happen."

In their doubles semifinals match, Herrmann and Treyz toppled Minnesota's Eric Frueh and Ruben Weber 8-5. Moving on to the championship match, the Nebraska pair outlasted Michigan State's Harry Jadun and Gijs Linders 8-7 (2) to bring home the trophy.

In the doubles consolation bracket, Nebraska's Andrew Dzulynsky and Vasileios Stavropoulos fell to Iowa's Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan.

In the second round of the singles main draw, the Big Red's Herrmann ousted Michigan State's Will Davis 6-4, 6-2, while Treyz outpaced Indiana's Alekzander Davila 6-1, 6-2. NU's Dusty Boyer lost to Michigan's Alex Buzzi 7-5, 1-6, 4-6, while Stavropoulos fell to Northwestern's Strong Kirchheimer 2-6, 4-6.

In the third round of the singles bracket, Treyz outshot Iowa's Dierckx 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals, while Herrmann was edged out by Michigan's Shaun Bernstein 6-2, 2-6, 4-6.

"Overall, today we struggled as a team in singles and only got Beau Treyz through to the quarterfinals tommorrow," Coach McDermott said. "Hopefully he will continue his winning ways and keep the fire burning for his teammates and we hope he can add a singles championship to his resume. Dusty Boyer and Marc Herrmann both lost some three-set matches today. We were hoping to get these guys through to the quarterfinals. We felt as coaches that they both had a chance to win the singles title."

In the consolation singles first round, NU's Charlie Shin won by default against Iowa's Joey White while fellow Husker Bradford Zitsch defeated Iowa's Juan Estenssoro 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 as Nebraska's Court Clark fell to Minnesota's Weber 4-6, 4-6. The Huskers' Tom Blackwell lost to Purdue's Aaron Dujovne 2-6, 6-4, 7-10, while Dzulynsky was defeated by Purdue's Mateus Silva 1-6, 2-6. Nebraska's Brandon Videtich retired against Iowa's Andres Estenssoro.

In the consolation second round, NU's Shin fell to Wisconsin's John Zordani 4-6, 4-6, while Zitsch lost to Iowa's Dominic Patrick 2-6, 3-6. Nebraska's Stavropoulos lost by default to Purdue's Dujovne as fellow Husker Boyer suffered the same defeat to Michigan's Kevin Wong.

"We won a few backdraw matches with some of the other team members throughout yesterday and today," McDermott said. "However, we were inconsistent with keeping a high level of play each match. We will continue to work in the off-season with making sure our guys understand their playing style and games plans that will make them most effective on the court."

Only one Husker remains in the competition with Treyz set to play in his singles main draw quarterfinal match on Sunday. Treyz will go head-to-head with Indiana's Dimitrjie Tasic in hopes of advancing to the semifinals and possibly bring home another title. The results from Sunday's match will be posted here on Huskers.com at the conclusion of play.
