Tulsa, Okla. - The Nebraska men's tennis team continued their successful spell at the ITA All-American Championships Invite on Tuesday. The Huskers pushed one duo through to the third round of doubles play with Marc Herrmann and Tom Blackwell emerging victorious on the day. No more Big Red singles remain in the competition having their final man drop from qualifying singles in the second round in an intense match.
In the qualifying singles draw second round, NU's Dusty Boyer was narrowly edged out by East Carolina's ITA preseason No. 87-ranked Joran Vliegen 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 5-7 to bring his run in the competition to a close.
In first round doubles, Boyer and teammate Beau Treyz fell to San Diego's Uros Petronijevic and Clarke Spinosa 2-8. The scarlet and cream's Herrmann and Blackwell received a bye and moved straight on to the second round.
Herrmann and Blackwell came out gunning in their second round doubles match. The Nebraska tandem outpaced DePaul's No. 46-ranked Filip Dzanko and David Vieyra 8-6.
"Dusty (Boyer) made a great run at it but just came up short today after having a match point to win in straight sets against the kid from east Carolina," Nebraska Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. "I am proud of the way our guys are competing this week and staying positive throughout their matches when they are struggling. Today in doubles Tom (Blackwell) and Marc (Herrmann) played lights out and put the hammer on a very good ranked DePaul team. I am looking forward to watching them play tommorrow morning and see if they can continue with their success!"
For Wednesday's third round doubles match Herrmann and Blackwell are set to face Texas A&M's Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo.
The results for Nebraska's matches will be posted here on Huskers.com at the conclusion of Wednesday's action.
