Husker Doubles Teams Start Well in Texas

Nebraska's doubles teams got off to a strong start to the women's tennis season on the first day of the Racquet Club Collegiate in Midland, Texas on Friday.
Patricia Veresova and Maggy Lehmicke teamed to defeat Texas A&M's Alyssa Caffey and Anna Mamalat 8-3 in their opening match of the tournament. The Huskers advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals to face Rice's top-seeded Dominique Harmath and Natalie Beazant.
Nebraska's German duo of Janine Weinreich and Stephanie Weinstein, who were the No. 4 seed, paired to oust UTA's Giada D'Ortona and Brook Dennis, 8-4. The Huskers will advance to the quarterfinals to face Texas Tech's Kelli Hine and Sandra Dynka.
Maike Zeppernick and Lauren Wagner fought hard in their doubles match, but fell to Abilene Christian's Julia Mongin and Brittney Reed, 3-8.
In singles action, Lehmicke picked up a first-round victory by sweeping Texas A&M's Alyssa Caffey 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round.

In other first-round action, Wagner fell to UTA's Brook Dennis, 4-6, 4-6.

Second-round singles play was tough for the Huskers with none of the women coming out victorious. Izabella Zgierska fell to Stephen F. Austin's Nataly Yoo, 6-1, 3-6, 3-6, while Weinstein was narrowly ousted by TCU's Monika Sirilova 7-5, 2-6, 6-7.

Lehmicke lost by a slim margin to TCU's Simona Parajova 6-7, 6-1, 5-7. Veresova was defeated by TCU's Olivia Smith 1-6, 2-6, and Weinreich lost to Texas Tech's Kelli Hine 6-1, 2-6, 2-6. Wrapping up the second round was Zeppernick, who fell to Texas State's Jessica Kahts 2-6, 0-6. 

The Huskers bounced back in second-round consolation matches with Weinreich defeating SFA's Kateryna Bugayenko 6-3, 6-1, while Weinstein dropped Abilene Christian's Julia Mongin 6-2, 6-2.
Zeppernick moved on with a win over Texas A&M's Caffey by a score of 6-4, 6-3. 

In other consolation singles, Zgierska fell to Texas Tech's Sofya Malysheva 3-6, 4-6, while Veresova was defeated by UTA's Giada D'Ortona 6-4, 2-6, 0-1 (10-3). Wagner lost her consolation match to Penn State's Devan McCluskey 6-4, 1-6, 0-1 (10-2). 

"The girls competed hard. I know some of them didn't have the results they may have wanted, but they all improved throughout the day." Nebraska Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. "They showed a great deal of composure and toughness as they transitioned from singles in the morning to doubles in the afternoon.  We will be tested in the doubles tomorrow, but I am sure the girls will respond and fight hard."
