City, Neb. - The Nebraska men's golf team will open its 2012-13
campaign by hosting the Fairway Club Invitational at ArborLinks Golf Course on
Monday and Tuesday.
ArborLinks Golf Course, a par-72, 7,158-yard layout, will
play host to 12 teams for the 54-hole event. Play begins on Monday with a
shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The second round will also be contested on Monday, immediately
following the first round. Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun
start at 8:30 a.m.
Nebraska comes into the 12th annual Fairway
Club Invitational as the defending champion. Last year, the Huskers shot 894 to
win by eight strokes. This year NU has added four golfers, three of which will
be in the team's lineup at ArborLinks. Freshmen Aaron Wong and Kolton Lapa,
along with junior Matt Record will all make their first starts for the Huskers.
Aaron's brother Nathan is also a freshman who joined the team in the offseason.
Manuel Lavin will tee off his junior campaign as the No.
1 player in the Husker lineup. Lavin compiled the second-best stroke average on
the team in 2011-12, with 75.35 strokes per round. He earned a runner-up finish
at the Fairway Club Invitational in 2011.
The newcomers will represent the second, third and fourth
positions in the NU lineup. Wong will make his debut as the No. 2 player in the
lineup. Record will play as the No. 3, while Lapa will be No. 4. Meanwhile,
senior Kevin Gillick will represent the No. 5 position for Nebraska.
The Huskers will bring four individuals to ArborLinks.
Seniors Neil Dufford and Jordan Reinertson, junior Ryan Grassel and sophomore
Ross Dickson will make appearances on Monday and Tuesday. Dickson earned the
third-best stroke average on the team last year, averaging 76.81 strokes per
round in 31 rounds. Dufford played in 30 rounds, earning a 76.97 stroke
average. Reinertson's stroke average was 76.50 in 22 rounds, while Grassel's
was 79.69 in 13 rounds.
