Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team (10-9, 2-3 Big Ten) flew past the Indiana Hoosiers (12-13, 1-5 Big Ten) on Saturday, outscoring IU 6-1 at the Vine Street Courts. The Huskers battled in doubles to earn the point before rallying to win three straight singles matches and take home the victory, ending at a 6-1 score after bouncing back at the No. 4 and 5 courts to edge past Indiana in third-set tie-breakers.
Beginning the match in doubles, NU's Marc Herrmann and Dusty Boyer toppled IU's Dimitrije Tasic and Sven Lalic 8-6 at the No. 2 position before the Hoosiers earned a court of their own at the No. 1 spot when No. 66-ranked Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk outlasted the Huskers' Brandon Videtich and Bradford Zitsch in a doubles tie-breaker, earning the 8-7 (9-7) win. The point was secured at the No. 3 court in another doubles tie-breaker when Nebraska's Tom Blackwell and Scott Elsass scraped by Indiana's Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic 8-7 (7-3).

The remaining matches played through with the Hoosiers only earning one point on the day after the match had already been decided. At the No. 3, IU's Bednarczyk rolled past NU's Blackwell 7-5, 6-4. Nebraska players at the No. 4 and 5 spots both dropped the first set but rallied to top their opponents in the second and outlast them in the third-set tie-breaker. At the No. 5, the Huskers' Vasileios Stavropoulos outpaced the Hoosiers' Essick 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) while fellow Big Red teammate Andrew Dzulynsky defeated Indiana's Tasic 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) at the No. 4.
"It was a good team victory today especially at home in front of a great crowd," Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. "We had a great crowd and great weather. We, as coaches, are proud of the guys as they came out believing in themselves today and stepped it up. Our doubles pulled us through today and set the tone for the match. We played a complete match and need to bring the same tommorrow against a very good Purdue team."
Next up for the Huskers is a match against No. 33-ranked Purdue on Sunday at noon at the NU Vine Street Courts. Following this weekend the Huskers have a four-match week, facing Iowa on Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa before hosting Northwestern and Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, April 11 at 3 and 7 p.m., respectively, in Lincoln, Neb.
