Nebraska Defeats Baylor At ITA Indoors

Charlottesville, Va. - The No. 17 Huskers (7-1, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 15 Baylor (3-4, 0-0 Big 12) 4-1 in their final match of consolation play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virgina at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Nebraska faced off against former conference adversaries emerging victorious to finish their stay in Virginia.

The Bears had no duo to compete at the No. 3 position for doubles so the win by default went to Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska. Needing only one match victory, the Huskers sealed the doubles point at the No. 2 position where Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein defeated Baylor's Megan Horter and Alex Leatu 8-3. The No. 1 doubles match didn't finish with the point already decided as Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova were leading the Bears' Ema Burgic and Kiah Generette 6-3.

Leading Baylor 1-0 going into singles, the Huskers extended the lead to 2-0 when Stefanie Weinstein ousted the Bears' Victoria Kisialeva 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. Baylor grabbed their only point soon after at the No. 6 singles when Alex Leatu defeated Maike Zeppernick 7-5, 6-2.

Nebraska led the match 2-1 but soon finished the match with two quick victories at the No. 5 then No. 1 positions. At the No. 5 spot Nebraska's Janine Weinreich dropped a set to Baylor's Kiah Generette only to sweep the next two for a final of 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Huskers' Mary Weatherholt edged past Baylor's No. 16 Ema Burgic 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot to secure the victory at 4-1.

The last two matches went unfinished with Nebraska's Patricia Veresova leading Baylor's Megan Horter 7-6, 4-1 at the No. 2 position and the Huskers' Maggy Lehmicke trailing the Bears' Jordaan Sanford 6-7, 5-6 at the No. 4 spot.

The Huskers return home to face Illinois State at the Nebraska Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. before hosting Colorado State two days later on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m.
