Portland, Ore. - The Nebraska women's tennis players Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska won three of four matches on Friday at the USTA Collegiat Invitational presented by Adidas at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center, hosted by the University of Portland. The Huskers were victorious in both singles matches and split their doubles action.
In the first round of doubles, Lehmicke and Zgierska fell to UCLA's Courtney Dolehide and Catherine Harrison 4-8. The loss dropped the tandem to the consolation bracket that was played later in the day.
In the singles matches, both Big Red players emerged victorious. Nebraska's Lehmicke rolled past Duke's Annie Muholland 6-0, 6-4 in her Group A match in the morning. NU's Zgierska ousted Portland's Saroop Dhatt 7-6 (3), 6-0 in her Group F match in the afternoon.
The Huskers pair rejoined in the afternoon in the consolation bracket to topple USTA Junior duo of Samantha Hampton and Erica Oosterhout 8-2.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, beginning with doubles with singles to follow and more doubles in the afternoon. The Nebraska duo starts the day at 9 a.m. in their second round of consolation doubles.
Singles will follow the doubles with Zgierska in her Group F match against Junior player Jada Hart at 10:30 a.m. and Lehmicke's Group A match is scheduled at 1 p.m. as she battles Michigan's Emina Bektas.
