Nebraska women's tennis players Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova earned bids to the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Weatherholt secured the Big Ten's automatic singles qualification grabbing a place amongst the 64 players to compete in singles play and also joins fellow Husker Veresova as the conference's automatic doubles bid to be the No. 3 seed in the 32-pair competition. The championships will take place on May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Urbana, Ill. following the team portion of the tournament that runs May 16-21.
Weatherholt grabbed the bid to the championships after posting a 23-1 overall record this season in singles, all of which were played during the spring, including a perfect 11-0 Big Ten mark during the regular season. She holds an 11-1 record against ranked opponents this spring. Weatherholt earned her second consecutive Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year and unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors this season after clinching them last season in 2012.
Weatherholt and Veresova secured their selection in the championships after finding a 19-3 overall record this season, including a 19-2 spring mark and undefeated 9-0 in Big Ten regular season doubles. The pair has peaked as high as No. 3 in the national doubles rankings this year, the highest doubles rankings from any tandem in Nebraska history. Veresova also earned a first-team All-Big Ten selection this spring.
Weatherholt is one of four Big Ten singles to secure a spot in the championship singles play, joined by Michigan's Emina Bektas and Ronit Yurovsky as well as Northwestern's Kate Turvy all of which received at-large bids in the draw. The Husker tandem is one of five Big Ten duos to earn berths into the doubles championships, joined by Illinois' Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White, Michigan's Bektas and Brooke Bolender, Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, Penn State's Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting, and Purdue's Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt.
