Huskers Impress at Intrasquad
The Nebraska women's gymnastics team held their intrasquad meet Friday to prepare for the 2014 season. The Huskers performed in front of over 200 fans at Mabel Lee Hall gaining valuable preseason competition experience. The defending Big Ten Champions went through vault, bars, beam and floor with six huskers who competed in the all-around.
"I am really proud of the effort that was given today on all four events," head coach Dan Kendig said. "I felt that we have been building up for this and it is the start we have been waiting for. Overall, I thought we had good quality routines on each event. I think we had a lot of really great individual performances."
The Huskers began the evening on vault. Coming off a historical vaulting year in 2013, the event is expected to be one of NU's strongest events this season. Although only six gymnasts participated in the event they each gave strong performances including both true freshman Jennie Laeng and Ashley Lambert.
Nebraska then moved to bars and beam where they split into two groups competing in conjunction with one another. Leading the team on bars was All-American Emily Wong with a mid-season performance. On beam, Jennifer Lauer, and Jessie Deziel stood above the rest with their smooth routines.
NU finished up on floor with some very exciting routines. Several Huskers will be competing to get into the floor lineup, and Friday night gave those athletes some solid looks.
"The thing that I am really going to focus on is that the team did a really great job of staying together and working hard," Kendig said. "Yes we have a lot of work to do, there is no question about that but at the same time I think today was a great starting point for the team."
The Huskers open their season on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. against Northern Illinois at the newly renovated Bob Devaney Center.
