With his point total, he broke the Nebraska school record of 7,707 points set by Rick Schwieger in 1992. He is the first Husker to win the decathlon since Aaron Henrichs claimed the Big 12 decathlon crown in 1998. Barrefors also broke the Big Ten Outdoor meet record and the McClimon Complex facility record.
The Husker women will open the final day of the meet tomorrow in seventh with 22 points. Wisconsin leads the women with 52 points. The men are third with 42.5 points, Wisconsin leads the men with 62 points.
Entering the second day of decathlon competition in first place, Barrefors did not let up as he recorded a season-best a time of 14.46 in the 110 meter hurdles. He then used a huge personal-best throw of 151-10 (46.27) in the discus to increase his lead over Jack Szmanda of Minnesota. He posted a season-best pole vault of 16-7 1/4 (5.06), while also recording a season-best javelin of 151-10 (46.29). He entered the final event of the decathlon with a 7,299-7,104 lead over Szmanda. Barrefors closed the two days of competition with a season-best time of 4:53.51 in the 1,500 meters, sealing his 2012 Big Ten decathlon victory with 7,897 points.
Chad Wright and Tyler Hitchler finished second and third, respectively, in the men's discus, while Danny Block from Wisconsin notched the event title. Wright posted a throw of 195-02 (59.48) on his third attempt, but Block recorded a throw of 195-08 (59.64) also on his third attempt to edge out Wright. Hitchler recorded a throw of 193-0 (58.82) on his second attempt to secure the third-place finish.
Chris Phipps, the 2012 Big Ten Indoor long jump champion, posted a second-place finish in the men's long jump with a season-best leap of 25-5 1/4 (7.75). He recorded the jump on his second attempt of the finals competition. Mike Hartfield of Ohio State topped Phipps with a jump of 26-1 1/2 (7.96). Additionally, Patrick Raedler finished fifth with a leap of 24-11 3/4 (7.61), and Scott Jorgenson took eighth with a season-best jump of 24-4 1/4 (7.42).
Veronica Grizzle led the Husker women in the shot put with an eighth place finish behind a throw of 50-5 1/4 (15.37).
Teran Walford finished sixth in the decathlon with a personal-best total of 7,272 points. He started his second day of competition with a personal-best time of 14.73 in the 110 meter hurdles and notched a throw of 111-7 (34.01) in the discus. After two events, he was situated in eighth place, heading into the pole vault where he recorded a personal-best mark of 14-7 1/2 (4.46), moving on to record a throw of 160-7 (48.94) in the javelin. Heading into the final event, he was in ninth with 6,513 points. Walford finished his decathlon competition with a personal-best time of 4:27.77 in the 1,500 meters and a personal-best 7,272 points.
In the women's combined events, Jordan Stiens finished sixth in her first conference heptathlon competition with a personal-best 5,216 points. She entered the day in ninth-place and posted a season-best mark of 17-8 1/4 (5.39) in the long jump. She produced a throw of 113-10 (34.69) in the javelin for fourth in the event. She notched a time of 2:20.67 in the 800 meters to close the two days of competition.
Anne Martin finished in 13th with 4,801 points as she started the day by recording a jump of 18-2 1/2 (5.55) in the long jump, moving up to 15th heading into the final two events of the day. She used an impressive season-best throw of 131-7 (40.12) to finish second in the javelin and finished the competition with a time of 2:29.86 in the 800 meters.
Jarren Heng posted a 10th-place finish in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase as he recorded a personal-best time of 8:53.41.
The 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Championships will conclude tomorrow with the women's triple jump at 11 a.m. The first running event, the women's 4x100 meter relay finals, is slated to begin at 12:45 p.m.
