NU Finishes Day One With A Strong Showing

Norman, Okla. - The Nebraska women's tennis team notches a solid day one in qualifying singles at the USTA/ITA Central Region Tournament at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Six Huskers look to play in the main draw with two advancing up from the qualifying bracket. 

In the qualifying first round, Nebraska's Maike Zeppernick beat Central Arkansas' Kelsey Williams 6-4, 6-3 while fellow Husker Izabella Zgierska toppled Central Arkansas' Simona Horsikyan 6-4, 7-6. NU's Katerina Matysova outpaced Kansas State's Maria Panaite 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (8) while the scarlet and cream's Lauren Wagner fell to Iowa State's Ana Gasparovic 1-6, 0-6. The Huskers' Hannah Sulz lost to Minnesota's Kendall Heitzner by withdrawing from the tournament due to illness. 

In the second round of qualifying, Zeppernick defeated Saint Louis' Natalia Yacaman 6-3, 6-2 as fellow Big Red member Zgierska scorched SIUE's Sierra Halverson 6-1, 6-3 as both Huskers moved on to the main draw. NU's Matysova fell to Tulsa's Rongrong Leenabanchong 6-7 (5), 6-4, 0-1 (7).

In the qualifying consolation bracket, Nebraska's Wagner fell to Tulsa's Carol Benito 0-6, 0-6.

The main draw begins Friday morning and six Huskers look forward to participating. Nebraska's Mary Hanna is set to face Oklahoma State's Carla Tur Mari while fellow Husker Lisa Andersson challenges ITA pre-season No. 72-ranked Mizzou's Cierra Gaytan-Leach. NU's Zgierska goes head-to-head with Central Arkansas' Simona Horsikyan as fellow scarlet and cream teammate Maggy Lehmicke battles Arkansas' Kimberley-Ann Surin. The Big Red's Zeppernick tackles South Dakota State's Iasmin Rosa while fellow Husker Brittany Brewster will duke it out against Southern Illinois' Natasha Tomishima. 

Main draw doubles also begins Friday morning with four Huskers tandems set to participate. NU's Zgierska and Zeppernick face Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina and Samantha Budai while fellow Husker duo Lehmicke and Hanna challenge Bradley's Ariel Dechter and Sarah Rodefeld. Nebraska's Sulz and Matysova will battle UMKC's Dimitra Stavriankou and Ammar Mouhoub while the last Husker pair Brewster and Andersson go against Wichita State's Veronika Blaskova and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul.
