Lincoln, Neb. - Prior to hosting the Mark Colligan Memorial on Saturday, the Nebraska track and field team competed at the NWU Invitational, hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan, on Friday at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. With just a small group of athletes in competition, the Huskers came away with four event titles.
Veronica Grizzle posted her second event win in just the second week of competition, taking home the weight throw title with a mark of 61-1 1/4 (18.62). Tristen Sharp tallied a third-place finish in the women’s shot put as she posted a season-best throw of 45-6 ½ (13.88).
Travis Englund won the men’s long jump as he recorded a personal-best-tying mark of 22-9 ¼ (6.94). Sam Shaw posted a leap of 21-4 ¾ (6.52) to finish sixth. Ellie Ewere tallied a fifth-place finish in the women’s long jump, posting a leap of 17-7 ½ (5.37), while former Husker Mara Griva won the event with a mark of 19-8 ¼ (6.00).
Melissa-Maree Farrington won the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.68, while Anne Martin tallied a season-best time of 9.00 for fourth-place. Mollie Gribbin came in second in the women’s 60 meter dash, posting a time of 7.72. Jazmin McCoy was third with a time of 7.72. On the men’s side of the 60 meter dash, Oladapo Akinmoladun finished second with a time of 7.01.
Levi Gipson won his second event of the season with a victory in the men’s 800 meters. He notched a time of 1:54.63 to finish first in the event. Anne Martin tallied a third-place finish in the women’s 400 meters, posting a time of 58.85. Amber Linnenbrink came in with a time of 1:39.09 to finish seventh in the women’s 600 meters.
The Huskers return to the track tomorrow for the Mark Colligan Memorial. NU will welcome Oral Roberts, UT-Arlington and Wichita State to the Devaney Center for the first scored meet of the season. The field events are slated to begin at 11:30 a.m., with the running events starting at 1:30 p.m.
