Nebraska senior right-handed pitcher Christian DeLeon was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday by the conference office. The honor was the first of DeLeon's career and marked the first time a Husker pitcher has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week since the Huskers joined the conference prior to the 2012 season.
DeLeon set the tone in last Friday's 9-2 win over No. 1 Oregon State at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in Surprise, Ariz. The senior from Richmond, Texas, gave the Huskers 7.0 strong innings after struggling in last weekend’s season opener against Pacific, where he went 4.1 innings in a no decision.
DeLeon gave up just one unearned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out five Beavers. He retired the first six batters he faced and produced a perfect 1-2-3 inning five times on the afternoon.
Since joining the Huskers from Blinn CC prior to last season, DeLeon has made 16 starts and has given the Huskers at least 7.0 innings eight times and has gone 8.0 innings four times.
Friday's victory was Nebraska’s first win over a No. 1 ranked team since the 2005 Big 12 home opener when the No. 4 ranked Huskers beat Texas, 4-3, in 16 innings at Hawks Field.
The Huskers continue their non-conference slate this weekend with a trip to Charleston, S.C., for a three-game series with The Citadel. The series kicks off on Friday, Feb. 28, at 4 p.m. (CT), continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 11 a.m.
