Huskers Ready for Northwestern, Illinois

NU Stays On the Road to Face Northwestern and Illinois

The Huskers play in two conference away matches this weekend as they face Big Ten opponents No. 12 Northwestern on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. in Evanston, Ill. before moving on to Urbana, Ill. to challenge No. 42 Illinois on Sunday, April 13 at noon. Nebraska sits at 8-12 overall after a double-loss weekend last week with 1-6 defeats to Indiana and Purdue. Nebraska and Northwestern have met six times in Nebraska’s history with the Huskers trailing in the series 2-4. NU and Illinois have met three times with Nebraska leading the series 2-1.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska remained out of the ITA Top 75 when the new rankings were released on Tuesday, April 8. There are eight Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75 and these teams are No. 12 Northwestern, No. 14 Michigan, No. 37 Purdue, No. 41 Indiana, No. 42 Illinois, No. 49 Ohio State, No. 60 Michigan State and No. 61 Minnesota. Michigan and Northwestern are the only two Big Ten teams inside the Top 25.

Ranking: 12

The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 12 in the national ITA Top 75 with two ranked singles players in No. 34 Veronica Corning and No. 10 Belinda Niu and one ranked doubles pair in No. 29 Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett. Northwestern went 20-9 in 2013 and 9-2 in the Big Ten Conference. NU were the Big Ten Tournament Champions dropping Michigan 4-1 in the final and were dropped from the NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16 by a 4-3 loss to Miami. The Huskers and Wildcats have met six times throughout history, with Northwestern leading the series 4-2. The last match between the two teams was on Saturday, April 27, 2013 when the Wildcats knocked the Cornhuskers out of the Big Ten Tournament in the second round 4-1.

Ranking: 42

The Illini are currently ranked No. 42 in the national ITA Top 75 rankings with no ranked singles or doubles players. Illinois went 14-11 in 2013 with a 6-5 mark in the Big Ten Conference. The Illini lost 4-1 in the Big Ten Tournament second round to Purdue. The Huskers and Illinois have met three times in the program’s history, with Nebraska leading the series 2-1. The last match between the Cornhuskers and Illini was on Friday, March 8, 2013 that resulted in a 6-1 victory for the Scarlet and Cream.

Looking Ahead

Nebraska returns home for their final two matches of the regular season with duals against Penn State on Friday, April 18 at 3 p.m. and Ohio State on Sunday, April 20 at 11 a.m.
