Nebraska assistant coaches Carrie Lane and Billy Maxwell were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday as they were selected as the Midwest Region Women’s and Men’s Assistant Coaches of the Year.
Lane, in her third year as throws coach at Nebraska, has led the Huskers to four NCAA finals bids, including two in the shot put, one in the javelin and one in the hammer throw. This season, she coached Annie Jackson to a personal-best mark of 55-0 (16.76) in the shot put, Carlie Pinkelman to a personal-best throw of 53-2 ¾ (16.22) in the shot put, Veronica Grizzle to a personal-best throw of 204-4 (62.29) in the hammer throw and Maggie Malone to a personal-best mark of 181-8 (55.37) in the javelin. Both Malone and Grizzle’s personal best throws are second all-time at Nebraska in the javelin and hammer throw, respectively. Malone earned the Big Ten title in the javelin and Jackson earned the discus crown as the Husker women’s throwers tallied 43 points at the Big Ten Championships last month.
In his 19th season with the Huskers, Maxwell coached the NU men’s sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams to eight bids for the NCAA finals, including four in the 400-meter hurdles alone. Five Huskers rank in the top-21 nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, while the 4×400-meter relay is sixth nationally. At the Big Ten Championships, Miles Ukaoma won the 400-meter hurdles and the 4×400 relay team of Levi Gipson, Jake Bender, Drew Wiseman and Cody Rush also finished first. Ukaoma posted the top time in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA West Preliminaries, clocking 49.34, which also ranks as the No. 15 time in the world and second all-time at Nebraska. The men’s 4x100-meter relay team also notched the second-best time in school history at the NCAA West Preliminaries, crossing the finish line in 39.24. Maxwell's honor completes the season sweep for the NU assistant coach as he earned the indoor award in March.
The Huskers begin competition at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday at Hayward Field.
