Las Vegas, Nev. -- The Nebraska wrestling team sits in eighth place with 58.50 team points after the first day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Friday at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Michigan holds the team lead with 112.00 points.

The Huskers were led by their two returning Big 12 Champions, top-ranked senior Bryan Snyder and fourth-ranked sophomore Jason Powell.

Snyder, who upped his overall record to 10-0, advanced to the championship 157-pound semifinals with a 18-4 major decision victory over Adam Britt of VMI. All 10 of the Easton, Pa., native?s wins have gone for bonus points this season (six technical falls, three major decisions, one fall).

At 125 pounds, Powell picked up his sixth fall of the season, pinning Vic Moreno of Cal State-Bakersfield at the 5:46 mark in the quarterfinals. Powell is 9-0 on the year.

Redshirt freshman Justin Ruiz dropped his first match of the season in a 5-3 loss to 10th-ranked David Sandberg of Pittsburgh in the 197-pound quarterfinals. The sixth-ranked Murray, Utah, native fell to 8-1.

Sophomore heavyweight Pat Miron also fell into the consolation bracket with an 8-0 loss to 17th-ranked Kevin Hoy of Air Force in the quarterfinals.

NU?s only participant still alive in the consolation bracket is 133-pound sophomore Joey Malia, who scored a fall over Evan Larkin of Arizona State in the consolation third round before squeaking by Evan Sola of North Carolina, 4-3, in the wrestleback?s fourth round.
