The Huskers could never get any momentum going on Monday. They began the match by losing the doubles point and the Rams didn't let up in singles play, winning three matches to clinch the victory.
After the match, Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott said that VCU was the better team today.
"We got beat by a better team today," McDermott said. "I was impressed with the way they came out and gave it to us in doubles and then they carried the momentum into singes."
In doubles play, the Huskers weren't able to win a match as both their nationally ranked doubles teams were defeated. Nebraska's No. 5 team of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim were upset by the Rams' duo of Alexis Heugas and Antoine Baronz, 8-5, on court No. 1. On court No. 2, VCU's Max Wennakoski and Filip Svensson downed NU's No. 22 team of Andre Stenger and Robert Schulze, 8-5.
Just like in doubles play, VCU kept the upsets going at the top two spots in singles play.
On court No. 1 VCU's Heugas defeated NU's No. 60 Aumueller in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. The Rams' Wennakoski downed Nebraska's No. 54 Lindheim, 7-6, 6-2, on court No. 2.
The Huskers lone point came on court No. 3 when Andre Stenger defeated VCU's Filip Svensson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
VCU's fourth point came on court No. 4 when Antoine Baroz downed the Huskers' Robert Schulze, 6-4, 6-1.
After the match, McDermott thought that his squad gave away too many points in singles play.
"I felt they didn't give us free points and we gave away too many free points," McDermott said. "In singles play, we have to be able to grind more. We have to stay out there longer for each point.
"They were the better team, and hopefully we learn from this and get better. Now I'm just looking forward to starting Big Ten play next week."
Nebraska will open up its Big Ten Conference play on Friday, March 2 against Illinois at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
