Gordon Named ESPY Award Finalist

Lincoln University of Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon was named one of five finalists for the 2005 ESPY Award for the Best Male College Athlete.

The junior from Lincoln was a consensus selection for National Player of the Year, winning the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy, the Golden Spikes and the Brooks Wallace Awards after hitting .372 with 19 homers, 66 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. The two-time All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year ranked in the top 10 in all 12 offensive categories, while leading Nebraska to a school-record 57 wins and an appearance in the College World Series. Gordon was the No. 2 overall pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 2005 MLB Draft.

The other athletes who are up for the 2005 ESPY are Utah center Andrew Bogut, USC quarterback Matt Leinart, Oklahoma State wrestler Steve Mocco and Colorado College hockey player Marty Sertich.

The 2005 ESPY winners will be announced during the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on July 13. The ESPYs will be televised on ESPN and ESPN Deportes on July 17 at 8 p.m. CT, preceded by the ESPY Red Carpet Special on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. CT
